London,Volumes 1 & 2 are n.d..Volume 3. 1731. Three Volumes, Folio. 46 cms x 30 cms.. Volume One; Engraved Title and dedication plus 98 engraved plates.. Volume Two; Engraved title plus 99 engraved plates. Volume Three;.Title page in blackand red.plus 98 engraved plates. The Umberslade not bound in, absent as is usual. Bound in full contemporary mottled calf, expertly rebacked, with raised bands, blind stamped in comparments with red and gilt title labels. .There is a small wormhole from plate 68/69, plate 70 and to plate 71, 72. It is in the gutter and well away from the printed surface. [See Images]. Many of the plates are folding or double paged. The contents and plates are crisp and clean. . Vitruvius Britannicus established Palladian Architecture as the approved style for Britain in the 18th Century. Colen Campbell issued the first three volumes.The plates depict the great country house estates, palaces, government offices and churches..The architects were Inigo Jones, Wren, Vanbrugh et al. with Colen Campbells own New English Paladian designs. The work appeared the same year as Leoni's Palladio. Campbell was a visionary and this work remains the indespensable collection of designs of 17th & 18th Century English Domestic Architecture. ..A further two volumes were issued of the later architects who took Palladianism from the grand to the modest and were published by John Woolfe and James Gandon in 1767 and 1771.
