After the author's release from the POW camp in Java in August 1945 and as the most senior British Army Officer, Van der Post remained behind at the request of the Japanese. He went from POW to overseeing the Japanese in their treatment of ex-prisoners and internees. In this post war process he built up a remarkable trust with the Japanese and his work laid the basis of future British policy in Java.
