' In 1829 the young Schomburk, a native of Germany, travelled to the Caribbean where, after various business failures began to devote himself to the study of natural history, especially botany. The quality of his work encouraged the Royal Geographical Society to sponsor his explorations of north-east South America for which no reliable maps or information existed which eventually led to him being appointed boundary commisioner of British Guiana with the task of surveying that colony s boundary.
