The countryside they worked in consisted largely of wide gibber
plains, thick red dust which could disconcertingly turn into a sea of mud after a deluge, salt brush, and spinifex. Yet sometimes it proved unexpectedly lovely so much so that the team would occasionally indulge in a private beautification scheme diverting their new road to pass by a group of attractive ghost gums.
